Myths: Of the Mouse Variety

Myth:
Mice are dirty.
Truth: Mice are actually very clean animals. They’re grooming habits are closest to cats.  They are constant groomers and work hard to make sure they are “clean”.  The myth about mice being dirty comes from the plagues that were spread by rats.  The truth is that the plague could be spread by ANY animal exposed to it, but rodents multiply quicker and can spread throughout a city faster than most animals.  Their ability to get into small spaces and reproduce is what caused the epidemic.  In truth mice aren’t dirty, it’s their cage that is!  You have just as much of a chance of getting an illness from a mouse as you would any other unvaccinated animal.

Myth: Mice love cheese!
Truth: Mice don’t really like cheese.  Occasionally a mouse will nibble on cheese, but if you really want to give them a treat try peanut butter or sunflower seeds.  Even turkey and small insect feeder worms will delight them!

Myth: Once mice are sick, nothing can be done. Who would take a mouse to a vet?
Truth: Mice are considered a throw away pet because it is rumored that they are like fish.  Once they are sick nothing can be done.  That’s actually completely false!  Most ailments that mice could contract can be solved by simple over the counter medications or good prevention in the first place.  Also finding a vet isn’t too difficult.  Just look for one that specializes in exotic pets, they can help you get the more important med’s quickly!  Any time your mouse gets sick there is a very good chance that he can be saved.  Having a mouse as a pet is the same as a dog or cat.  It is a responsibility you assume and taking the animal to a vet might very well happen. Be prepared for such costs!

Myth: Mice like water and baths
Truth: No no no!  NEVER try to bath or introduce your mouse to water.  A simple drop on the nose can drown your mouse immediately!  They will clean themselves.  If something were to happen and they were covered in something sticky or gross – use a warm (not hot!) damp wash cloth and gently wipe it off. Then immediately wrap the mouse in a towel until he is dry again.  However, always try to avoid that whenever possible.
